Product description

Whether in a car, a cafeteria, a restaurant, or at the comfort of home, one of the niftiest things we can find around is a tissue box with a piece of soft & refined paper inside. Astonishingly, something modest, comfy, and convenient as a piece of paper could do so many salient yet silent things for us.

We have been using them in a manifold of ways.

During the times of sadness to wipe the tears of grief, during the times of happiness to wipe the tears of bliss, as a token of care to someone that we love and care, or even as a random act of kindness by sharing it with someone we probably will never cross paths again.

Last but not least, then there are those of us who would roll it, aim it at the corner waste bin and shoot a perfect three-pointer that would make any NBA star jealous.

Tissue paper is a simple thing with a myriad of uses, but have you ever thought about the origins of the product? Its heritages and pedigrees? If you don’t mind, let’s go to those ancestries first and after that, we will introduce you to a fantabulous tissue product from Emirates Refreshments that you will definitely like a lot.

The History of Tissue Paper

Do you know what’s common between the Chinese, Roman & Japanese empires? Well, history tells us that they were the people who initiated the use of tissue products in one way or the other.

Facial tissue was used in ancient Japan for centuries before its modern cousin appeared around us. The earliest form of tissue paper used in Japan was known as “Washi,” which was made from certain vegetable fibers. Several early European voyage accounts describe the use of a handy, soft, and silky piece of paper that the people had used to blow their noses, which were thrown out after.

The Romans on the other hand had resorted to a handy piece of linen cloth to wipe their faces and noses. Some historians have shared a notion that this was the earliest form of the handkerchief, which slowly paved its way for the modern-day tissue paper, which assures the same comfort that linen offers without any assorted maintenance efforts.

On the other side of the world in China, the earliest recorded reference of tissue papers can be found back in 589 AD. During the ancient Ming reign, it was recorded that over 720,000 pieces of paper were used for sanitary purposes at the imperial court alone at the capital of Nanjing. About ten million packets of paper are said to be used during the same time as toilet paper in Zhenjiang during the same period.

The History of Modern Tissue Paper

The roots of modern tissue paper as we know it can be traced back to two places that contradict each other. One from a classroom and another from a battlefield. In 1907, a teacher faced a dilemma regarding the prevailing cold epidemic in her classroom in Philadelphia. She noticed that all of her students in that class were sharing the same towel to wipe their hands and faces & she thought it could be the reason why the cold epidemic was happening. So, to tackle the problem, what she did was ingenious. She took some paper, cut it into towel-sized pieces, and asked the students to use them individually. As you may have guessed, the mild cold that had been bothering her students vanished soon after.

Arthur Scott from the Scott paper company came to know about this, and he deiced to market the product. He perforated paper into towel-sized sheets and sold them as disposable paper towels, thereby creating an entirely new grocery category. Arthur’s products were used by restaurants, railroads, and restrooms. It took the world a world war to use those products in the way we perceive them today.

The earliest form of modern tissue papers appeared as filters inside gas masks during the 1st World War. Subsequently, the same got revised and branded for civilian purposes and appeared on the convenience store shelves in the United States during 1924 as cold cream/makeup remover. Modern tissue paper as we know it was born this way.
